Reopening KEO Position for Letters

Posted on: January 14, 2026 By: Kingdom Equestrian Marshal

Due to bad timing on my part and in order to allow the new Earl Marshal a chance to have a say in his deputies’ appointment. The KEO has office has opened back up for letters of intent and interviews.

Letters will be accepted now through March 6th. Interviews will be conducted after Gulf Wars (likely via Zoom) with the new KEO stepping up April 1, 2026.

This is a 2-year term deputy position within the Office of the Kingdom Earl Marshal. Therefore, please note that the final approval of candidate is with the Earl Marshal and the Crown.

Those interested in filling this role should have strong communication skills, both in-person and online; willingness & ability to work with others in and out of Kingdom; be technologically adept enough to learn and maintain a competent understanding of Calon and Google suite; ensure that they are able to log into, manage, submit reports, and make official announcements through Calon; they must have willingness & ability to support the equestrian community by being a point-of-contact for anyone in or out of the Kingdom with questions pertaining to SCA equestrian.

You do not have to be an equine owner to be KEO! However, basic equine knowledge and being accustomed to equines are necessary.

The KEO must be an authorized equestrian marshal within Calontir for a minimum of 6 months.

Due to the overall nature of the SCA equestrian community being small but spread out over the Known World it is not necessary but incredibly important that anyone looking to fill this role consider the willingness/ability to travel in and out of Kingdom. It is especially important to consider the need to support your fellow Calontir equestrians by traveling to their equestrian events at the very least.

KEO Job Duties per the Handbook:

  • Managing the kingdom equestrian marshallate and oversight of equestrian activities within the Kingdom.
  • The KEO must generate, at minimum, quarterly reports on equestrian activities to the Kingdom Earl Marshal with a collateral report to the Society Equestrian Officer.
  • In the event of an injury to a person or animal, requiring medical attention, occurring at a Society-sponsored equestrian activity, the KEO will make an oral report to the Kingdom Earl Marshal, Kingdom Seneschal and SEO within 24 hours of being notified of the accident, followed by a written report to the same within 72 hours delineating the circumstances of the accident.
  • Maintaining a roster that indicates those individuals warranted as equestrian marshals, as well as those authorized to participate in equestrian activities.
  • Monitoring the activation of equestrian insurance when required.
  • Maintaining records relating to equestrian matters, including but not limited to all incident reports, copies insurance forms after receipt from the Equestrian Marshal in Charge (EqMIC) of equestrian events.
  • Upon assuming the office of KEO, providing the SEO with current contact information.
  • Updating and maintaining their kingdom equestrian rules, and rider and driver authorization procedures, to be compliant with Society Rules within 1 year of changes.
  • The KEO shall have the authority to warrant deputies to assist in conducting equestrian activities. Their authority will be as determined by the KEO and may include serving as equestrian marshals. Upon appointment of a new KEO all existing deputy warrants will terminate.

All interested parties please send a letter of intent to me (eqmarshal@calontir.org), the Earl Marshal (earlmarshal@calontir.org), and the Crown (crown@calontir.org).

Please include any relevant experience you have, why you want to take on this role, how you intend to navigate yourself and others through the SCA EQ insurance changes, and what kind of impact do you wish to make on the SCA EQ Community, if any.

The deadline for letters of intent is March 6, 2026, with interviews to be conducted after Gulf Wars and the new KEO shall be expected to step up April 1, 2026.

If you have any questions, please reach out to me at eqmarshal@calontir.org.
